Tofu is made from soybeans, water and a coagulant, or curdling agent. It is high in protein and calcium and well known for its ability to absorb new flavors through spices and marinades. Due to its chameleon-like qualities and nutritional value, tofu, a staple of Asian cuisines for hundreds of years, has recently become popular in Western vegetarian cooking. So popular, in fact, that it is celebrated with its own annual festival and has almost become synonymous with vegetarianism itself. Look for tofu in the produce section of your regular grocery store.

Cooking with Tofu

When cooking with firm tofu, you will usually want to drain and press the tofu first, and some recipes will tell you to freeze and thaw your tofu.

For those of you who are in bad health, going the way of the vegetarian diet can do wonders to your health. Being a vegetarian can be a very good way to control your diet and slowly nursed yourself back to optimum health. If you are thinking of being a vegetarian, you must understand that as with a normal diet, the same rules still apply to your vegetarian diet. You need to include variety, balance and moderation into your vegetarian diet as well.

As you know, a vegetarian diet is free from all meat. Be it beef, chicken, fish, mutton, no meat should be present in a vegetarian diet. Non vegetarians will often wonder where do vegetarians get their protein from and how do vegetarians get their daily fix of protein if they don’t take meat?

For vegetarians or vegans for short, their intake of protein can come from nuts, seeds and soy products. Some nuts are specially high in protein and can virtually replace meat as the main source of protein. You just have to take note not to overdose yourself munching on those tasty crunchy nuts. On the other hand, Lacto-ovo vegetarians get their protein from eggs and other dairy products. As you can see, a vegetarian diet is not that bad as most people make them to be.

However, there is something that the average people is not aware of. Given the nature of people’s diet in today’s society, people often consume more protein than they requires through the meat that they consume. As a result, most of the protein that people take in are not properly absorb into our body system. This is why a vegetarian diet is consider to be more green and healthier in nature.

The main concern for a vegan is the lack of nutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D. Normally, these nutrients are readily available with a normal diet that consist of meat but with a vegetarian diet, you need to consume certain types of vegetarian products in order to get enough portions of these nutrients to meet your daily requirements.

For vitamin B12, you have to consume more soy products or milk to a certain extent. Another alternative is to go for vitamin B12 supplements. For calcium, vegans can go for orange juice or soy milk which are both rich in calcium. Beans and leafy green vegetables will also contain some calcium as well. As for vitamin D, you can go for mushrooms and milk.

Being a vegetarian is one of best way to good health. However, it also takes a lot of will power and determination in order for one to persist and stick to a vegetarian diet.

There are many types of healthy meal plans for weight loss. While, as long your diet is balanced most programs all accomplish the same thing. Yet, among all of the different types of customizable programs, it’s my opinion that none are as clean and healthy as what you would find in all-vegetarian meal plans. Most people would define a vegetarian as someone who only consumes fruits, vegetables, grains & seeds and conversely does not eat any meat, such as fish, poultry, beef, bison or shellfish. However, most would be surprised to know that there are actually many different types of vegetarian preferences and unique diet plans.

Firstly, you have the traditional hardcore vegan who is a person that as completely sworn off the consumption of any and all animal products. The traditional vegan diet is the pinnacle of weight loss catering to healthy meal plans. Partly due to the fact that the most common foods responsible for weight gain are not allowed on a vegan diet. There are certain kinds of vegetarians who till still eat dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese yet they refrain from eating eggs. These types are called lacto vegetarian. The options for a lacto vegetarian meal plan have much greater variety than a regular vegan. Therefore due to the diet composition, they will normally consume more calories as well. A vegetarian who is in need of more sources of protein will eat both eggs and dairy products. These are called ovo-lacto vegetarians. Their healthy meal plans have typically have the highest content of protein among all vegetarian diets. They have the most liberal eating habits out of all types of vegetarians.

There are other forms of vegetarianism that are not as commonly found throughout society, and one of these forms is known as fruitarianism. As you mayhave guessed, fruitarianists strive towards diets that consist completely of fruits of plants and trees. In this article, we’ll discover some of the commonalities of fruitarianism so that you might gain a better understanding of what this lesser-known practice is all about.

The fruitarian diet can really differ depending upon the individual that is undergoing the practice. Some feel that making the majority of their meals, or fifty percent or more of their meals, consistent of fruits. Others feel that the definition of a fruit may include such foods such as nuts, grains, or bell peppers. Some argue that a true fruitarian will only eat fruits that will naturally fall off of the plant, so that they may avoid killing the plant by harvesting the fruit.

As far as motivation for the diet, many of the individuals that follow a fruitarian diet do so due to religious reasons; they may employ a holistic approach to medicine and argue that a fundamentalist lifestyle should be sought after, stating that Adam and Eve ate fruit in order to set a good example. Others simply feel that they want to avoid destroying life as much as possible, treading lightly on the earth and being gentle to both plant and animal life.

The diet is certainly not without its critics. The United States National Institute of Health has concluded that a fruitarian is not able to attain the proper levels of vitamin B12 in their diet. This can be damaging to their health. Also, the lack of protein that the diet promotes can be problematic in terms of an individual?s level of health. If you are contemplating a frutarian diet and are concerned about how the diet can be sustainable and maintain your level of health, you may want to thnk about supplementing your diet with protein, vitamin B12, and several other key nutrients that you are unable to obtain eating fruit alone.

The fruitarian diet can be very difficult to maintain. If you find yourself agreeing with the fundamentals of the diet, you may want to contemplate trying to ease into frutarianism by consuming more fruit and gradually decreasing your consumption of animal products. In the end, you may find that the slow and steady path towards a fruitarian diet can be ultimately more successful than trying to immediately switch your diet up. Also, be sure to do plenty of investigation concerning the types of supplementation you will need in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Raw foodism promotes a diet where raw foods are consumed for at least 75% of the time. Foods that have been cooked above 115 degrees Fahrenheit are avoided for the most part, simply because the cooking process destroys the enzymes and lot of vitamins and minerals that the body needs in order to function properly. On top of the food losing its nutrients, cooked foods also become toxic to the body. According to studies these toxins can cause many age related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more.

Raw Foodism can be divided into several different diets, all of which focus on eating raw foods. The most popular raw food diet is a raw vegan diet, which is said to be the healthiest diet. This diet restricts all animal products, and focuses on eating only foods that come from a plant source. This diet is able to provide you with all the nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids that your body needs in order to live a long and healthy life. The diet promotes a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and seeds as well as many superfoods such as sea vegetables, acai berries, goji berries, raw cacao and protein powders.

Organic foods are also highly promoted because they contain more nutrients than conventionally grown foods. In addition, organic foods do not contain any pesticides, herbicides or any other chemicals that are often found on conventional produce. Next is the raw vegetarian diet, which also focuses on eating the same foods as the raw vegan diet. But this diet allows you to have dairy, eggs and honey. However, there are some raw vegetarians who refuse to eat eggs, but will consume dairy, and others are the opposite and refuse to consume dairy, but will consume eggs. Another diet is the raw omnivore diet which actually promotes eating raw meats such as beef, chicken, fish as well as other sea animals. The diet allows you to eat basically anything that you want as long as it is raw at least 75% of the time. Thus you can eat all the raw vegan foods, the vegetarian foods as well as raw meats.

Vegetarian are one of the healthiest eating routines you can find. It’s a common misconception that people go vegetarian because of the concern for animal rights. Well, yes there are some that do that diet because of the animal right, but there are some that also do it because it’s a cheap way to eat and get healthy. The American Dietetic Association approved this kind of eating. But you need to consult nutritionists first before going into it. Your body is different from the others. You have different nutritional needs. Some will go on this kind of diet because of their religion, while others are in it because their parents taught them to eat like that. Others are in this diet because of their health issues.

To know more about being Vegetarian, you need to know that there are different classifications under this kind of diet. A Lacto-ovo vegetarian doesn’t eat poultry, fish and meat but eats dairy products and eggs. A real vegetarian doesn’t eat any meat including white meat and fish meat. Vegan-ism doesn’t include any dairy product and animal products like honey and gelatin. Macrobiotic cut back is under vegan-ism. People that eat with this discipline don’t include refined foods that have preservatives and processing. Drinking coffee or anything that has caffeine in them is something they don’t like and they don’t like to eat food that came from animals as well.

Going into vegan and macrobiotic food eating can hurt your body because of the nutrition deficiencies that it can pile up. The body will need to have a source of calcium and protein for it to function. Pesci-vegetarians eat fish but don’t eat poultry while Semi-vegetarians eat small amounts of poultry and fish. Semi-vegetarians choice of food is seeds, fruits, grains, veggies legumes and nuts. If you would want to try this diet, I suggest you take in multivitamins as well. The body needs a source of protein, iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. Furthermore, you need to put in a lot if research first before trying it out. Your body might already be giving in without you knowing. Caution in researching on what to eat, how to eat and when to eat it are needed.

Pure vegans, meanwhile, do not use any products containing animal derivatives, which may even extend to the use of cosmetics and other products that were tested on animals. At the other end of the spectrum, semi-vegetarians exclude most meat from their diet, particularly meat from mammals, although they will eat poultry and fish. Raw vegetarianism allows only the consumption of uncooked nuts, fruits, seed or vegetables. Fruitarianism is a group of vegetarians who insist on eating only fruits, nuts, seeds and plant matter which can be retrieved without harming the plant itself. Vegetarianism includes many other levels and labels, too. What it all comes down to is personal choice and commitment. People choose vegetarianism for a variety of reasons. For some, it is because of health concerns. For others, it might be religious. Then there are those who for ethical reasons revolving around ecology and animal rights choose a meatless diet. Of course, there are many other reasons why people choose to follow a vegetarian diet and lifestyle.

Despite what critics may say, vegetarianism can actually be a healthy diet. Before making the switch, one must know what they are doing in order to maintain healthy nutrition as a vegetarian. One of the key concerns among vegetarians is protein intake. Although most people get their protein primarily from meat, these sources can be replaced by soy, quinoa, and other foods. Leafy greens, tofu, and other foods are also important for meeting vitamin, iron, and calcium requirements and getting enough of other essential nutrients. Vitamin D is also a concern for vegetarianism. For those who do not drink milk, sun exposure is key. Just 15-30 minutes a day can help. There are also Vitamin D supplements. To be on the safe side, it is a wise idea for a someone who is dedicated to vegetarianism to take a daily multi-vitamin supplement, as well as an omega-3 supplement.

For those wanting to follow the road of vegetarianism, an in-depth study of the possible options and factors would be a smart idea. Vegetarianism is a way of life, a conscious decision, and a lifestyle commitment. Whatever your reasons for choosing vegetarianism, such a diet and lifestyle does have its benefits. Before making the switch, it is important to understand the health aspects of taking meat out of your diet.
